HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College senior guard Ashton Bankos (York, Pa./York Catholic) earned Landmark Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors on Tuesday, marking the third time this season she has received the award.
Bankos paced the 18th-ranked Eagles (11-1, 1-0 Landmark) to a pair of wins in the Juniata Holiday Classic, averaging 17.5 points and 6.0 rebounds over the two-game event.
Versus Misericordia University, Bankos poured in 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers. She also dished out four assists with one steal, and was a perfect 5-of-5 at the free-throw line.
The next night against Ramapo College of New Jersey, Bankos netted 12 points with half of that on a 6-of-9 effort at the stripe. She also went 3-of-10 from the field, with one assist and two steals.
For the season, Bankos is averaging 16.3 points and 5.6 boards, while shooting .492 from the floor. She went into the Juniata Holiday Classic ranked 98th in the nation in field goal percentage (.495), and 112th in scoring (16.1).
Bankos was the first player in program history to earn Landmark Player of the Week honors twice in one season, let alone three times, after she previously won the award back on November 21 and November 28. Prior to this season, Juniata women's basketball players had captured the accolade just five times over the Eagles' first four years in the Landmark Conference.
Juniata returns to Landmark Conference play this Saturday, when it hosts the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center. That game will be part of a doubleheader with the men's team; the Juniata men will tangle with Merchant Marine starting at 5:30 p.m.
