HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College softball will be holding four clinics over the winter months, starting this Sunday, Nov. 18 and continuing on Dec. 9, Jan. 27 and Feb. 10. The sessions offer beginner's grades 4-8 and advanced pitchers grades 9-12 the opportunity to come inside the gym and throw with Eagle pitchers and coaches during the off-season.
"Because of the lack of training facilities in Huntingdon, local pitchers don't get the opportunity to throw during the off-season," said new Juniata softball head coach Sam Kszepka. "These opportunities will help to keep their pitching skills sharp, focusing on correct basic mechanics, as well as learning new techniques."
Kszepka is an All-American pitcher who has been coaching at both the NCAA Division I and Division III levels. The 2013 season will be her first year at the helm and she will be using her experiences from the circle and the dugout to breathe new life into the Eagles program.
Beginners – Grades 4-8
This session runs from 10-11:30 a.m. Pitchers will go over the basic mechanics of windmill pitching by breaking down the motion and working on each component separately. The instructors will introduce the proper way to grip the ball, wrist snap, arm circle and driving with the legs during the pitch.
Advanced – Grades 9-12
This session runs from 1-2:30 p.m. It is designed to show pitchers how to enhance the basic mechanics and add more speed to their pre-existing pitches. They will also learn the proper mechanics of breaking pitches including the drop, curve, screwball and rise. There will also be emphasis on location, movement and the changeup.
The cost is $35 per session or $125 for all four. Each session will be limited to only 10 pitchers and each pitcher will need to supply their own catcher who cannot be another participant in the clinic.
