HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College football team has announced its captains for the upcoming 2013 season. The foursome tapped include seniors Brandon Felus (Columbia, Pa./Columbia), Kevin Gorman (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly Central), and Jared Shope (Altoona, Pa./Altoona), along with junior Ward Udinski (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West).
"The four captains are Juniata men of great passion and energy," said head coach Tim Launtz. "Their passion will serve to energize the performance of their teammates and be leaders of great integrity and character. Their passion extends to the well-being of their teammates."
Felus and Udinski were named 2012 most valuable defensive and offensive players, respectively, at Juniata's Annual Athletic Awards Night. Felus was an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) South All-Star and named to the Centennial Conference first-team, the first under Launtz. The defensive lineman finished his season ranked 11th nationally in sacks. Udinski started all 10 games at quarterback and led the team in rushing and passing yards in 2012. He was also third in the league in passing yards per game and fifth in touchdowns.
Both Gorman and Shope earned second-team all-conference honors last season. It was the second straight year Gorman received the honor. He led the team with 73 tackles and finished his season tied for ninth in the league. Shope finished fourth in the league in sacks and second on the team behind Felus.
Juniata opens the 2013 season at home against Thiel on September 7. Their other home games include Gettysburg (Sept. 21), Johns Hopkins (Oct. 5), Muhlenberg (Oct. 26) and Susquehanna (Nov. 16) for senior day.
