Huntingdon, Pa. – Maxwell Mattioni made five saves and Jayden Gaynor led the attack with three shots on goal, but Juniata men's soccer fell 1-0 to unbeaten Catholic on Tuesday night at Gibbel Stadium.
The matchup was tight throughout, with Juniata producing 20 total shots, 13 of which came in the second half. Despite the effort, Catholic's defense held firm, and a 46th-minute goal from Donik Elshani, assisted by Carson Shamoo, proved to be the difference.
Liam Kolbay, Jase Colino, and Beckett Young each anchored the back line with strong defensive performances while contributing offensively with key set-piece opportunities. Jacob Haynes added three shots in the midfield as the Eagles controlled long stretches of possession in the second half.
Mattioni turned away multiple dangerous looks from the Cardinals, keeping Juniata within striking distance until the final whistle.
With the loss, Juniata moves to 7-5-7 overall and 2-3-4 in Landmark play and is eliminated from Landmark playoff contention. The Eagles will wait for a possible ECAC post season tournament bid.
