HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Senior outside hitter Rachelle Wiegand (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), of the No. 10 Juniata College women's volleyball team, was named Landmark Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
"Rachelle had been very explosive in the gym all week practicing," said head coach Heather Pavlik. "It wasn't too much of a surprise to see that roll right into the weekend for her. She's been fantastic no matter what we've ask her to do. She's been playing defense most of the year, but at different times throughout the year we've moved her into the outside hitter spot and she's been fabulous every time."
The Eagles finished the week 3-1 and clinched the No. 1 seed in the Landmark post-season tournament. Wiegand hit for a career-high .455 attack percentage in the teams' 3-0 win over Moravian. She had a match-high 12 kills against the Greyhounds. In the final conference match of the regular season, Wiegand had another match-high, 11 kills, against Goucher off a .360 average. This is the first Player of the Week award for the senior.
"I can't say enough about what she is willing to do on a daily basis for this team," added Pavlik. "She will do anything she is asked and that's pretty special. It's a hard job and she does it extremely well. I'm very happy for her to get this honor. It's one she deserves greatly."
