HUNTINGDON, Pa. – After a 5-1 week on the road in Hilton Head, S.C. and Washington, D.C., the Juniata College women's tennis team returns home to open the 2014 season against Lycoming College tomorrow, Wed. March 21, at 4 p.m. The Eagles opened the spring season with five straight wins before dropping a 5-4 decision to Catholic University of America. Juniata is now 6-1 on the year including the fall season.
"This biggest thing for us to look for out of this match is to get back on track after the first loss of the season," said head coach Jason Cohen. "We had some matches against Catholic where we didn't perform to our usual level of play. That cost us. I hope we can get back to fundamentals and doing the things that we're good at and getting back into a rhythm."
Last season Juniata traveled to Williamsport, Pa. to take on the Warriors in a non-conference contest. The Eagles came away with the convincing 8-1 win claiming all six singles matches and the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. Lycoming has yet to play in the 2014 spring season and enters the contest with Juniata 1-3 after a tough fall stretch.
The Eagles have show strength up and down their line up and have claimed two Landmark Conference Player of the Week honors this year with sophomore Tori Gray (York, Pa./Central York) earning the honor in mid September and classmate Jacklyn Renninger (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) garnering this weeks' distinction for her performances over spring break.
Renninger and doubles partner freshman Rachel Yurchisin (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Fransiscan) are 11-2 at the No. 3 doubles position and Gray and partner sophomore Mitsuki Koh (Cupertion, Calif./Monta Vista) are 7-5 at No. 2 doubles. Gray and Koh combined for the 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles last season against Lycoming.
Junior Heather Waring (San Antonio, Tx./John Jay) and senior Megan Phillips (Jefferson Hill, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) round out the regular players for Juniata at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles positions, respectively, and pair up for No. 1 doubles. The duo is 9-5 so far this year
"We've had a few fans out at matches, but the players do a good job of getting friends to come out and support the team and we have more family at home matches so it should be fun," added Cohen. "Definitely looking forward to playing at home where it's something we're a little more used to."
