HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College women's swimming team has been chosen sixth in the Landmark Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the coaches, the league announced this afternoon. The Eagles finished sixth at the conference championships last year and broke four different program records in the pool at Marywood University that weekend. Juniata received 17 total points and sits in front of Drew (12) and Goucher (10).
"I think [the poll is] accurate for right now," said second-year head coach Nathan Smith. "I don't know if it's accurate for where we'll end up by the time the Landmark Conference meet comes around. Because we showed some big improvements last year, that if we get anywhere near that same level of improvement, we could probably move up some places."
Juniata opens the first leg of its season this weekend at the Millersville University relays. The Eagles have eight competitions slated before the winter break. When the team returns after the New Year, Juniata will face some of its toughest competition straight away.
"I think Marywood probably will [be a big meet]," said Smith. "They've been improving a lot the past few years and the diving is also a big factor in that matchup. We don't dive, so we have to come up with the points from other places. We've got some girls who are very talented and very competitive in the conference. "
