HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College softball team took time out from competing over spring break to volunteer at the North Myrtle Beach Human Society. The Eagles helped staff give attention to cats and walk dogs that spend extended hours of the day in their cages.
"I think it's really important to give back to the community," said first year head coach Sam Kszepka. "The ladies at the Humane Society said they needed help giving the animals some love and attention. When I asked how they don't love on the animals all day, every day, she said they just didn't have the time to do it. They rely on volunteers."
According to its website, among the Humane Society's missions is finding loving and permanent homes for abandoned animals; and reaching out to children, teachers, and parents through the education of pet responsibility. It calls volunteers the "backbone" of its organization. Volunteers perform a number of tasks including bathing animals, feeding cats, walking dogs and cleaning cages.
"The girls really enjoyed helping," added Kszepka. "It opened their eyes to a possible adoption in the near future vs. purchasing a pet. It was a great team bonding experience, and a great way to relax and have some fun with each other and the animals."
Juniata played eight games across five days while down in Myrtle Beach, S.C. over spring break. The Eagles are 5-7 overall this year and after an unseasonably cold, wet March, Juniata will finally be able to open at home this coming weekend with back-to-back Landmark Conference doubleheaders. They will face Scranton on Saturday, April 6 starting at 1 p.m. and then take on Catholic in a rescheduled series on Sunday, April 7 also at 1 p.m.
