Phillips Leads Eagles Past Scarlet Raiders
NEWARK, N.J.- The #4 men's volleyball team picked up another Continental Volleyball Conference win as they won at Rutgers Newark, 3-1, Friday evening inside the Golden Dome.
Tyler Phillips led the way with 15 kills (.357), three aces, nine digs, a solo block, and two block assists. Felix Baier added 14 kills (.370), three digs, and a block assist.
The Eagles reached set point first in a hotly contested opening set at 24-23 and did again with a Baier kill, making it 25-24. The Scarlet Raiders scored the next three points and won set one on a service ace 25-27.
Set two was back and forth that saw the Eagles score five straight to get to 19-15, but the Scarlet Raiders countered to get back within on at 22-21. A Phillips kill and a Rutgers Newark attack error brought JC to set point, and Phillips ended the set with another kill, 25-22.
In set three, the Eagles led early 9-4, but they found themselves trailing later 18-19. A 7-3 surge down the stretch gave the Eagles the lead in the match, 25-22.
Rutgers Newark hit a robust .452 in the fourth, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles got the points when they needed them to take the set and the match 25-23.
Juniata will face Kean on Saturday at 1:00.
