HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The #4 Juniata men's volleyball team won twice on Saturday, defeating Continental Volleyball Conference opponent Marymount 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 26-24), and winning 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-17) over Cairn, inside Memorial Gymnasium.
The opening set with Marymount was a close one, with the Saints pulling even at 17 with a kill. The Eagles took charge from there, closing set one on an 8-3 run to take the set 25-20.
Marymount blitzed the Eagles with an 11-4 run to open the second, and the Eagles couldn't recover. The battled to get within three, 19-21, but Marymount closed them out 21-25.
A 7-1 run early in the match put the Eagles in the driver's seat, but Marymount battled back within one, 19-18, so Juniata did it again with another 7-1 run that ended set three with a kill from Chris Mellor, 25-19.
The Saints had their chance to force a fifth set as they reached set point first, 23-24. A service error, an ace from Octavian Sperry, and a Saint attack error ended the match 26-24 for the Eagles.
Mellor had 11 kills (.667) and four block assists, while Tyler Phillips had 11 kills (.333), an ace, five digs, two solo blocks, and two block assists. Will Sierer had 45 assists, five digs, three kills, and three block assists.
In the second match of the day against Cairn, the Eagles hit .500 in the first as they cruised to a 25-14 win in the first set.
Set two featured an 11-2 run by the Eagles as they took control and went on to win, 25-18.
Set three was the most efficient set for the Eagles from a hitting perspective, as they hit .609 and took the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.
Lukas Ricciardi had 13 kills (.684) with three aces and three digs, while David Dziekonski had eight kills (.889), five aces, three digs, and a block assist. Logan Peterson added five kills, three aces and a block assist while Noah Rosner totaled 36 assists and two aces.
The Eagles will return to action against Lynchburg (1:00) and Bridgewater (3:00) on Saturday, the 21st, at Bridgewater.
