Mattioni, Tanaka & The Coaching Staff Claim Major Awards as Men's Soccer Puts Five on the Landmark All-Conference Team
TOWSON, Md.- The Juniata men's soccer team was well-represented on the Landmark All-Conference team, with Maxwell Mattioni being named Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Shawn Tanaka being tabbed Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Brendan Grady, Associate Head Coach John Mumford, and Assistant Coach John Gonzalez were named the Coaching Staff of the Year.
Brandon Marzula and Gavin Rauhut join Mattioni and Tanaka on the all-conference first team. Harshaan Grewal was named to the second team. This is the most first-teamers to make all-conference in program history and the most major awards.
The first-year forward from Tokyo, Japan, had a banner first season for the Eagles. Tanaka tallied 24 points so far this season (10 goals, 4 assists), which earned him Rookie of the Year honors and put him on the all-conference first team. He is second in the conference in goals, third in the Landmark in points, and first in game-winning goals with six.
The sophomore goalkeeper from Drexel Hill, Pa., was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year and made the all-conference first team after a strong campaign that included five shutouts during conference play in the regular season. Mattioni tied for second in the conference in shutouts, fourth in total saves, and fourth in goals against average.
The junior midfielder from Wexford, Pa., was named to the all-conference first team after tallying nine points (1g, 7a) on the year. Marzula is tied for third in the Landmark in assists.
The junior defender from Boiling Springs, Pa., made the all-conference first team after playing a part in a defense that had seven shutouts. Rauhut was also a threat going forward, totaling 13 points (3g, 7a). He is tied for third in the Landmark in assists.
The junior defender from Grantville, Pa., made the all-conference second team as he helped anchor a defense that had seven total shutouts. Grewal added a goal and an assist this season.
Head Coach Brendan Grady and the rest of the staff earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors after overseeing a historic season for the program. The team had their best-ever finish in regular season conference play, winning the most games in conference play ever and earning the most shutouts.
Sitting at 11-3-6 (7-0-2 Landmark Conference), the Eagles were selected as the #1 seed and will host one of the two pods for the Eastern College Athletic Championship. They will play the winner of McDaniel vs the University of Hartford this Sunday at 1:00 at Gibbel Stadium.
