HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's soccer team led early but ultimately drew with visiting York College on Saturday evening at Gibbel Stadium in a match that was delayed by lightning.
Ty Mazzarella and Jayden Gaynor each scored a goal, while Brandon Marzula and Jalen Holliday had an assist apiece. Maxwell Mattioni made five saves in the match, several of them outstanding deflections that stopped what appeared to be surefire goals.
Three minutes into the match, Marzula played in a corner that Mazzarella flicked into the far corner of the net with his head to JC an early 1-0 lead.
The teams were 6-6 in shots at halftime, but Juniata felt like they had control of the game.
In the 60th minute, Gaynor won the ball in the midfield and played a ball down the left flank to Holliday, who took a touch before squaring it back to Gaynor. The sophomore took a touch before smashing the ball off the crossbar and into the net to double the lead.
The Spartans ramped up their attacking efforts and, nine minutes later, smashed a shot toward goal that Mattioni made a stupendous diving effort to stop. However, a York forward pounced on the loose ball and curled it into the net.
In the 84th minute, York found an equalizer on a long-range effort from 22 yards out.
The match would end with the teams even at two.
York had 16 shots to Juniata's 12, and it was an even nine corners apiece for each team.
Juniata is on the road this Wednesday as they travel to take on Carnegie Mellon Wednesday at 7:30.
