TOWSON, Md. – Senior Jeremy Hays (McMechen, W. Va./John Marshall) of the Juniata College men's basketball team earned First-Team All-Landmark Conference honors, the league announced this afternoon. This is the second all-conference nod for the guard who was chosen a second-team member for the 2012-13 season.
"Jeremy is a dynamic player," said head coach Greg Curley. "He is creative around the basket, he has the ability to squeeze through small places, he's a very good finisher for a guard, he's very athletic and explosive, and with his sense on the open floor – there are not many guys better than him."
This season, Hay's has led the Eagles with 15.6 points per game, 391 total points, 132 assists, and is averaging over 32 minutes per game. The guard is ranked nationally in both total assists and assists per game. Both his field goal percentage and his steals per game marks also have him among the top players in the country.
"This year was a big adjustment for our whole team and I thought we handled it as well as we could," said Curley. "Jeremy had played alongside two other all-league guys his entire year that allowed him to roam defensively and just kind of play his game. That was the role we put him in and he played it very well. This year, he did a really nice job of transitioning into more of a traditional point guard role between leadership and how to run the team. That was a big adjustment and I thought he did a really good job with it."
Hays owns the top spot in the Juniata record books for career steals and hold three of the top five marks for single-season steal records. On December 16 of this season, Hays was named to the D3Hoops.com team of the week for his back-to-back double-double performances of the week. He is the first Juniata player to earn All-Landmark honors twice in a career.
"The big thing for me, Jeremy really improved throughout his career, " said Curley. "He became a better team defender. He improved to become a better leader. He improved across the board and I'm really proud of his development. Here we are again, in the post season for the third time in a row. This is only our fifth postseason in program history and three of the four years he's been here we've been in the postseason. That's quite an accomplishment and speaks very loudly to Jeremy's contributions to our program."
