HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata baseball team earned a split with visiting Penn State Altoona, dropping game one 7-5 before dominating game two 12-2, on a rainy Thursday afternoon at Langdon Goodale Field.
The Lions got on the board first in the top half of the first, but the Eagles countered in the bottom half of the inning as Zach Johnston stole third, the third went wide, and raced home to tie things at one.
The Lions scored four runs on one hit and an error in the second. Jackson Cunnane smashed a home run over the fence in left-center.
The visitors scored on an RBI single in the fourth and added another run in the sixth to make it 7-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ty Vickers smacked a two-run double to left center to score Nate Epstein and Matthew Quigley. Jace Irvin drove in Vickers with a double down the left field line to make it 7-5, but Juniata couldn't get any closer.
Game two saw the Eagle offense get hot early and stay hot. Irvin plated Vickers with a sacrifice fly to left, and Johnston got home later on an error.
The Juniata offense exploded in game two, scoring nine runs on seven hits, as the Eagles led 11-0.
In the fifth, Ayden Thelen drew a bases-loaded walk, to push the advantage to 12.
The Lions managed to push two runs across the plate in the sixth, but the Eagles shut them down the rest of the way.
Ben Ryan got the win, allowing six hits over four innings with two strikeouts. Connor Lindsey struck out the side in his one inning of work, Krieg Pierce allowed two runs on two hits in 2/3rds of an inning of work, while Tim Coleman allowed one hit in his third. Robbie Pliszka allowed one hit with two strikeouts in his inning of work. Vickers went 2-2 with a triple, an RBI, and three runs scored, while Johnston went 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Connor Blough went 2-3 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored. Irvin was 1-1 with two walks, three RBI, and a run scored. His single in the top of the third inning was the 100th of his career.
The Eagles wrap up the year at 13-27.
