ASTON, Pa.-The Juniata men's volleyball team opened their weekend with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-14) win at Neumann, Friday evening at the Mirenda Center.
The Eagles opened the match with a 13-3 spurt to take complete control of the opening set. A kill from Will Hafen (Las Vegas, Nev. / Bishop Gorman) was followed by an attack error to tie the score at 1-1. Four kills from Sean Cavanagh (Cranberry Twp., Pa. / Seneca Valley), two Knight attack errors, a kill and an ace from Hafen along with a Jordan Orth-Moore Annapolis, Md. / International School of Kenya) kill had the Eagles up 10-2. Neumann put down a kill before an Orth-Moore kill and an ace made were followed by another Knight kill off a JC blocking error. A kill from Michael Young (Mount Wolf, Pa. / Northeastern) made it 13-3. The Eagles cruised the rest of the way, with a Theodore Weinberger (Santa Clara, Calif. / Adrian C. Wilcox HS) kill ending set one, 25-13.
The second set was tight early, with the Knights getting within one, 6-5, on an Eagle service error before JC managed some separation. A kill and an ace from Cavanagh along with a Hafen kill made it 9-5. The Knights took the next point before two more kills from Hafen along with a kill apiece from Cavanagh and Matt Schaffer (Mount Wolf, Pa. / Northeastern) forced a Neumann timeout. A Hafen kill and a block by Schaeffer and Orth-Moore pushed the advantage to 15-6 and the Eagles had control the rest of the way, winning on a service error 25-16.
The third set saw the Eagles gain some separation early, and nurse the lead midway through the set. With the score at 16-10, a 5-0 surge essentially iced it. Cavanagh and Hafen smashed a kill each, Schaeffer added an ace, Orth-Moore and Cavanagh combined for a block before Cavanagh managed his 13thkill to make it 21-10. With the score at 23-14, a kill from Weinberger gave the Eagles match point and Bryce Workman (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) ended it with his fourth kill of the match, 25-14.
It's a busy day for the Eagles tomorrow as they will face Immaculata at 11:00, Hunter at 5:00 and Cairn at 7:00.
