HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata men's basketball saw three Eagles earn Landmark All-Conference honors this week. Juniors Brian Scholly (State College, Pa./State College), Kevin Stapleton (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) and Jeremy Hays (McMechen, W. Va./John Marshall) each earned all-conference nods for the first time in their careers. Scholly was named to the first-time while Stapleton and Hays picked up spots on the second-team. Juniata tied reigning champion Catholic for the most all-conference recipients.
"I think it speaks to the improvement and quality of our team," said head coach Greg Curley of the Eagles being one of only two schools to have three all-conference athletes. "In the end, these are all team awards. All are very deserving and fortunately for us, all return next year."
The trio are top three or four on the team in points, field goals, free throws, rebounds, and minutes. Scholly, who is the Eagles leading scorer, is ranked fourth nationally in 3-point field goal percentage and fifth in 3-point field goals per game. He broke the single-season 3-point field goal record this year and is just six three's away from becoming the programs all-time 3-point field goal leader.
"Brian's being included on the first team speaks directly to his work ethic, team attitude, and his ability to improve," said Curley. "We asked him to step up and carry more of the scoring load this year and he responded. He continues to develop his game and grow as a leader."
Stapleton and Hays are also averaging double figure points this season. Stapleton is Juniata's leading rebounder this season and second leading scorer at 12.1 points per game. He has accumulated over 630 points in just two seasons. Hays is the most accurate shooter on the team at .477 from the floor. He is also the Eagles steals and assists leader. He currently holds the single-season steals record (68) and is the all-time career steals leader.
"Jeremy and Kevin are both very deserving of this recognition," Curley stated. "Jeremy is our playmaker and gives our team a little extra. At times, he's a one man highlight show. Kevin is just always there, always competes and is our most complete player. He impacts the games in so many ways. I'm excited to see where they go from here."
